BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team saw its 23-point cushion reduced all the way to two but managed to survive with a 71-65 win over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening (Nov. 12) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
UNE built its sizable lead in the opening half, scoring the last 12 of the 1st quarter to go up 19-10, and then starting the 2nd frame with an 18-4 run. During the combined 30-4 stretch, the Huskies could only muster 2-of-17 shooting and committed 12 turnovers.
The gap was still 20 (67-47) with 7:30 left in the 4th, before Southern Maine mounted its comeback attempt. The visitors rattled off 18 unanswered to slice the deficit to 67-65 with 1:40 remaining, as the hosts went 0-for-6 from the floor with five turnovers. The Nor'easters, however, executed a couple defensive stops and made a few free throws in the waning moments to seal the result.
Abby Cavallaro topped UNE (2-0) with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Jocelyn Chaput contributed 16 points, six assists, and three blocks, while
Sadie Nelson tossed in 11 points.
Kaylee Beyor added 10 points and seven caroms;
Madalyn Sanborn also shared the team-high of seven boards.
For the Huskies (1-1), Victoria Harris registered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and picked up seven steals. Kristen Curley had 14 points, and Jackie Luckhardt notched 11 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and five assists.
The Nor'easters overcame 25 turnovers in the contest by holding a nine-point edge (23-14) at the charity stripe.
