Noreasters surge past WNEU, 63-54

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Jocelyn Chaput and Abby Cavallaro keyed a 16-2 2nd-half run as the University of New England defeated Western New England University, 63-54, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 5) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Holding a 35-34 edge near the end of the 3rd quarter, Chaput and Cavallaro combined for 11 points as the Nor'easters used the next six minutes to push the margin all the way up to 51-36 with 6:49 remaining in the contest.

Both players scored 13 after halftime and finished with 18 points, which was a season-high for Cavallaro. UNE (6-6, 4-0 CCC) received 13 points and eight rebounds from Sadie Nelson, and Sabrina Johnson chipped in with seven points. Allie Goodman corralled a game-best 10 boards.

The visitors went 10-for-21 behind the three-point arc, as opposed to the 4-of-22 performance by the Golden Bears.

Pacing Western New England (8-4, 3-2 CCC) was Meghan Orbann with 15 points and seven rebounds. Emily Farrell tallied 11 points, and Emily Scurka grabbed nine off the glass.

The Nor'easters jumped out to a 12-4 advantage but trailed 22-16 in the latter stages of the 2nd frame. The hosts led by two (24-22) at the midway break.

UNE is scheduled to entertain Salve Regina University (1-3 CCC) on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
