BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University registered nearly half (32) of its point total in the final 10 minutes to overcome a double-digit deficit and claim a 65-60 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball result versus the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
After leading for less than one minute early in the 3rd period, the Golden Bears found themselves down by 12 with 9:15 to play. It was still 49-38 before a couple three-pointers from Julia Quinn started nine in-a-row for the visitors, and, trailing 52-47, Quinn knocked down another trey to spark a 10-2 run. Meghan Orbann connected from long range with 2:37 remaining to give WNEU the edge for good at 55-54.
Jocelyn Chaput canned a triple with 22 seconds left to get the Nor'easters back within one (61-60), but four free throws around a UNE turnover sealed it for Western New England.
Emily Farrell matched Quinn's nine 4th-quarter points, as the Golden Bears shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 9-for-10 at the line. Over the initial three frames, the visitors were hitting at just a 22-percent clip on field goal attempts (8-of-37).
Orbann topped WNEU (13-7, 7-4 CCC) with 16 points, and her 14 rebounds led to a 49-29 advantage on the glass. Farrell finished with 13 points and four assists, while Courtney Carlson joined Quinn with 12 points.
For the Nor'easters (9-11, 7-4 CCC), Chaput tied a career-high with 23 points.
Ashley Coneys recorded 13 points and
Sadie Nelson went for nine points with a team-high five boards.
Abby Cavallaro tallied eight points and four assists before fouling out.
UNE had a season-low seven turnovers in the contest, and converted the 22 by the Golden Bears into 28 points going the other way.
The hosts led from the start and built a 20-10 margin in the 2nd session, only to see WNEU chalk up 10 straight to pull even. The Nor'easters sat on a 24-23 edge at the break, but Carlson notched the opening hoop of the 3rd to momentarily flip things. Cavallaro helped UNE regain control with a pair from downtown, as a 12-1 spurt pushed the lead to its peak (45-33).
Big Blue is slated to entertain Curry College (7-3 CCC) on Wednesday.
