MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Middlebury College separated from a three-point halftime lead with a 9-1 start to the 3rd quarter en route to a 66-50 women's basketball result against the University of New England on Thursday evening (Jan. 24) at Pepin Gymnasium.
The Panthers, who began the year 12-0, won for the fourth consecutive outing to improve to 17-2 overall. The Nor'easters slip back to 9-10 on the season.
Pacing the hosts was Colleen Caveney with 16 points and four steals. Kira Waldman notched a double-double of 15 points and 11 caroms, and Maya Davis tossed in 11 points. In addition to nine points, Catherine Harrison hauled in 15 rebounds as Middlebury established a 57-37 advantage on the glass. Betsy Knox contributed eight points, nine boards, and four blocks.
The Panthers collected 31 offensive rebounds, including 13 by Harrison, and converted those second-chances into 27 points. Middlebury shot 37 percent (24-for-65) in the contest, which included 1-of-15 from deep, and made half of its 34 free throw attempts.
For UNE,
Jocelyn Chaput tallied 14 points and shared the team-high of seven rebounds with
Sabrina Johnson.
Sadie Nelson and
Ashley Coneys posted 10 and nine points, respectively, and both grabbed six boards.
The Nor'easters connected at a 26-percent clip (14-of-54) from the field in the match, and hit five three-pointers. The visitors were similarly successful on the offensive window, turning 17 caroms into 19 second-chance points.
Middlebury led from the start and used a 7-0 spurt to go up 17-9 in the 1st quarter. After the initial basket of the 2nd, however, UNE was back within one (17-16). The Panthers recorded seven unanswered in response (24-16), but then surrendered the last six to only hold a 30-27 edge in the break.
Following the run to commence the 3rd frame, Middlebury led by at least nine (46-37) the rest of the way.
The Nor'easters (7-3 CCC) are back at home on Saturday to entertain Western New England University (6-4 CCC).
