CLERMONT, Fla. --
Andrea Gosper set down a bunt single and
Kaitlin Carson beat-out the throw home for the deciding run in the bottom of the 8th inning as the University of New England softball team defeated the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, 4-3, on Monday (Mar. 12) in the Dot Richardson Spring Games hosted by the U.S. National Training Center.
The Nor'easters (1-3) never trailed in the contest, after
Sarah Lachapelle recorded a two-out, RBI-single in the 1st frame.
Nicole McSweeney had an RBI-single in the 5th to tie it for the Corsairs (4-1), only to see UNE get two back in the last half of the inning.
Meg Harvey made it 2-1 by putting an RBI-double into right field, and a groundout on the very next play padded the lead.
With two away in the UMD 6th, a bases-loaded single by Maddie O'Gryzek knotted things back up at 3-all. The Nor'easters managed to get two in scoring position with just one out in the 7th, but were unable to end it in regulation.
The Corsairs came up short in the top of the 8th on nearly the same play that eventually won the game for UNE, as pitcher
Sydnee Bessler fielded a ball on the infield and fed catcher
Avery Alberghini for the tag on a runner breaking from third base.
Gosper, Alberghini, and Harvey each recorded two hits for the Nor'easters, and Bessler went the distance to earn the result in the circle.
Brittany Polk went 3-for-3 for UMass Dartmouth, and McSweeney finished with two singles. Annika Evensen took the loss in 1.1 innings of relief.
