#12 Monks break away from Nor'easters to stay unbeaten

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Hannah Marks and Kelsi McNamara accounted for 19 4th-quarter points as No.12 Saint Joseph's College of Maine extended a one-point lead into a 71-55 women's basketball decision against the University of New England on Wednesday evening (Nov. 28) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Monks (5-0) started the final period with a 44-43 edge, but soon scored nine in-a-row to grab a 56-45 cushion with 5:23 to go.

Marks and McNamara shared the game-high of 18 points. Marks poured in all of her points following intermission, knocking down 5-of-6 from long distance. McNamara went for 14 after halftime, and finished with eight assists along with five steals.

St. Joe's received a 12-point, 15-rebound performance out of Emily Benway, and got 12 points, five boards, and five assists from Julia Champagne.

The Monks out-scored the Nor'easters by 14 at the free throw line, and posted a 21-2 advantage in points-off-turnovers. SJC relinquished possession just three times in the closing 20 minutes.

For UNE (2-5), Jocelyn Chaput notched 13 points. Ashley Coneys registered 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Abby Cavallaro added 10 points. Sadie Nelson hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds.

The Nor'easters jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the 1st, however only held an 18-15 cushion through 10 minutes. The hosts conceded the initial seven of the 2nd, but regained a 27-25 margin by the midway break. McNamara had the answer to a couple of four-point SJC deficits in the 3rd, and Marks put the visitors in front for good (42-41) with a trey late in the frame.

UNE is slated to begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Roger Williams University.
