GORHAM, Maine -- Alex Srolovitz notched 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting to pace the University of Southern Maine in a 65-58 women's basketball win against the University of New England on Wednesday evening (Nov. 14) at Hill Gymnasium.
The Huskies trailed at the start, 10-4, but Srolovitz gave USM the edge for good by the end of the 1st quarter (15-13). The spread remained in single digits until midway through the 3rd, when Southern Maine turned a 38-33 cushion into a 51-37 advantage by the time 30 minutes were complete.
The lead peaked at 16 (53-37, 55-39) as the 4th began, and was still 14 (57-43) with 5:26 to go. Nine points from
Elyssa Nicholas down the stretch helped UNE close to within six, but the Huskies canned all six of their free throws in the final 36 ticks to seal the result.
After Srolovitz, Southern Maine (3-0) received a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds from Kimberly Howrigan. Jackie Luckhardt tallied eight points, while six points, nine boards, and three blocks came from Victoria Harris. The Huskies posted a 42-27 rebounding margin in the contest.
Sabrina Johnson topped the Nor'easters (1-1) with 16 points -- behind 7-of-10 accuracy from the field -- and added a team-high seven caroms. Nicholas totaled 13 points and
Sadie Nelson recorded 12 more along with four steals.
UNE will get back at it this weekend when Connecticut College enters the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday (5:30 p.m.) to take part in the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament. Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Bridgewater State University are set to join in on the action, which will continue into Sunday.
