Amherst uses six-run 3rd to get past Nor'easters in season-opener, 9-1

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Kyra Naftel and Alena Marovitz had back-to-back two-RBI hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning to give Amherst College a four-run cushion, on the way to a 9-1 (5 inning) softball victory over the University of New England on Saturday morning (Mar. 11) at the Dot Richardson Spring Games hosted by the U.S. National Training Center.

The Purple & White (1-0) then added to their 6-1 lead with three more in the 4th, and shut down the Nor'easters (0-1) in the top of the 5th to end it.

Marovitz finished with a pair of two-run homers, and Naftel went 2-for-3 with three runs driven in. Ally Kido also recorded two hits in the game, and Andrea Sanders scored twice.

Lorena Ukanwa secured the win in the circle for Amherst, tallying 10 strikeouts after surrendering UNE's lone run in the 1st.

The Nor'easters got on the board when Avery Alberghini started the day with an infield single, stole second, and scored on a one-out double by Caroline Schoenbucher.

Katelyn Austin took the loss for UNE.
