LEESBURG, Fla. -- Charline Plasczynski plated runs in the top of the 5th and 7th innings to lift Western Connecticut State University to a 4-2 softball win over the University of New England on Saturday (Mar. 11) at the Dot Richardson Spring Games hosted by the U.S. National Training Center.
Plasczynski drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk that gave the Colonials (3-2) the lead, and then provided an insurance run in the last frame with a one-out double.
After a one-out free pass to UNE in the bottom of the 5th, WCSU's Sara Tenke retired the next eight batters to seal the result. In six innings of work, she finished with five strikeouts against two hits and four walks to earn the victory.
Melissa Sprague chalked up eight strikeouts over four innings in the starting role for the Nor'easters (0-2), while surrendering three hits and an unearned run.
Sophia Burnham took the loss.
Lauren Gerhard supplied the two hits that led to UNE's runs in the 2nd and 4th. Sprague also had a hit and scored the team's first run.
