BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sean Jany poured in 42 points to pace the University of Southern Maine in a 97-88 men's basketball decision over the University of New England on Wednesday night (Nov. 15) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Huskies (1-0) began the 2nd half on a 12-0 run to go up 55-41, and the lead peaked at 15 (59-44) shortly after. But the Nor'easters (0-1) used the next 7:20 to assemble a 24-11 stretch that closed the gap to just two (70-68) inside the last 10 minutes.

UNE would get no closer, though. A three-pointer cut the spread to 92-88 at the 1:36 mark, however the home side could not connect on any of its final six field goal attempts to apply further pressure.

Jany was efficient throughout the evening, going 13-of-20 from the floor (5-of-9 3-pointers) and 11-for-15 at the line. He also notched seven rebounds and three blocks. Bryon McMillian and Devin Moultrie added 12 points apiece for Southern Maine, while Cam Scott and Christian McCue each tossed in nine. Scott picked up five steals and Kevin Weisser controlled 16 defensive rebounds.

For the Nor'easters, Ryan Matthews led the way with 14 points. Another 10 came from both Daron Hoges, Jr. and Drew Muniz, and Matt Hobbs registered nine. Hoges and Hobbs pulled down seven rebounds each, and Drew Coveney grabbed a career-high nine steals.

UNE turned 25 offensive boards into 26 second-chance points, and paired that with 29 points off 36 USM turnovers (25 UNE steals).

The Huskies out-scored their opponent by 20 at the charity stripe, making 33 of 49 tries. The Nor'easters, meanwhile, struggled from behind the arc, cashing in on just 19.7 percent (15-of-76) of their shots from deep.

UNE will host Colby College, Colby-Sawyer College, and St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament this weekend. Action gets started at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
