Trevor Fleurent scored three goals and assisted on another to help lead the University of New England to an 8-3 win over Bowdoin College in a non-conference men's ice hockey game played Tuesday evening (Nov. 24) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The victory was the first-ever for UNE (2-4-1) over the Polar Bears (0-2-1) after dropping the first nine meetings in the all-time series.
In what turned out to be a high-scoring contest, goals were tough to come by in the opening period. Despite being outshot 15-10 in the frame, UNE notched the lone marker when
Brady Fleurent one-timed a centering pass from the slot for his first collegiate goal.
The Nor'easters would double their lead at 12:20 of the second as
Tom Gildersleeve converted a feed from
Blaise Healy.
Bowdoin cuts its two-goal deficit in half just over a minute later as Chris Wallace snapped a wrist shot from the high slot just inside the right post.
UNE would get that goal back four minutes later on Armand Uolomeale's fourth tally of the season. Set-up on the doorstep, Uomoleale poked home a pass across the slot from
Dylan Bengston to give the hosts a 3-1 cushion headed to the third.
The Nor'easters put the game away with five consecutive goals to open the final frame.
Trevor Fleurent notched his hat-trick with three scores, while Healy and
Sam Vikich got into the scoring column.
Bowdoin received goals from Matthew Lison and Camil Blanchet in the final 5:22 to complete the scoring for the evening.
Connor Maloney recorded 38 saves in his first collegiate start to earn the win for UNE. Offensively,
Brady Fleurent, Healy and Bengston each contributed three points to go with
Trevor Fleurent's four-point evening.
Nathan Colannino had 19 stops in the opening 43:31 for Bowdoin before giving way to Erick Wurman, who totaled 12 the rest of the way.
The Nor'easters will play in the PAL Stovepipe Tournament hosted by Southern New Hampshire University this weekend. UNEÂ faces Daniel Webster College in an opening-round game Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bowdoin takes on Endicott College Saturday at Colby College before hosting nationally-ranked UMass Boston Sunday at Watson Arena.
