BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Leah Janelle tallied 13 kills and four aces to lead the University of New England women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Lasell College on Saturday morning (Sep. 6) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores of the non-conference match were 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22.

Sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak added nine kills and senior Rachel McGahie chipped in with seven for the Nor'easters (2-1); both recorded eight digs. First-year Brooke Gibbons notched 31 assists to support the attack. On defense, sophomore Nikki Mathewson pulled up 13 digs.

Big Blue has topped Lasell (0-7) in each of the five all-time meetings between the teams.

The Lasers built multiple leads of three points (5-2, 8-5, 10-7) in the early stages of the 1st set before the hosts worked their way back. Things were level at 15-all when the Nor'easters rattled off 10 of the next 12 to take the frame.

Play was closer in the 2nd, with Lasell holding a 19-17 cushion until an 8-3 run closed the stanza for UNE. Big Blue assumed a large lead (8-2) to start the 3rd, but lost it at 10-9 in favor of the visitors. Neither side had an advantage of more than two points until the end, as the Nor'easters capped the match with a 5-1 spurt.

First-year Odina Ellis led the Lasers with 10 kills. Classmate Caitlyn Garcia totaled 11 digs, while junior Alyssa Nahigian posted a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.

Both teams dropped contests with Colby-Sawyer College later in the afternoon.
