Chargers complete tri-match sweep against UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Colby-Sawyer College received 11 kills apiece from seniors Stephanie Vecchio and Jackie Keating to fuel a 3-0 victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon (Sep. 6) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-17, 25-17, and 25-21.

The Chargers (4-2) also got nine kills from sophomore Gabrielle Rodriguez, 35 assists from junior Laura Smolinski, and four aces out of senior Sarah Hannon. Four players reached double figures in digs for Colby-Sawyer -- Keating (12), first-year Lexi Strong (11), Hannon (10), and Rodriguez (10).

For UNE (2-2), senior Rachel McGahie finished with 10 kills and 11 digs, and classmate Leah Janelle added nine winners. Sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak contributed eight kills, 10 digs, and was part of three blocks. First-year Brooke Gibbons had 25 assists, and sophomore Nikki Mathewson tallied a team-high 12 digs.

Tied at 9-9 in the 1st set, Colby-Sawyer ran off six straight points to gain some separation. The difference was two (15-13) in the 2nd frame when the Chargers assembled a 6-1 spurt on the way to a two-set lead. In the 3rd, UNE held a 7-3 edge before a 16-4 stretch swung control over to the visitors. The Nor'easters pulled to within four (20-16), but could not get any closer.

Both sides had defeated Lasell College earlier in the day.

CSC returns home to face Rivier College on Wednesday (7 p.m.). Big Blue heads to Bowdoin College its next time out on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.).
