Down two sets, Johnson & Wales roars back to win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Johnson & Wales University recorded six of the last seven points during the deciding set to complete its comeback against the University of New England, as the Wildcats pulled out a 3-2 non-conference women's volleyball win at the Wildcat Classic on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 13). Set scores were 21-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-9, and 15-12.

Alyssa Drapeau led the hosts (3-6) with 13 kills, 10 digs, seven blocks (4 solo), and three aces. Lauren Cordts added 11 kills, and Paula Cadavid chipped in with 10 winners as well as 14 digs. Kellen Tensen had 41 assists to go with 12 digs. Kaitlin Kuntz pulled up a match-high 19 digs.

UNE (2-7) got a match-best 14 kills from senior Leah Janelle, in addition to 10 digs. Classmate Rachel McGahie registered 10 kills, and sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak had nine more. Szczepaniak, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, also scooped out a team-high 16 digs. First-year Brooke Gibbons tallied 37 assists and 15 digs, sophomore Nikki Mathewson garnered 13 digs, and first-year Courtney Lambrese posted three solo blocks.

The Wildcats also got the better of the Nor'easters earlier in the day by a 3-1 margin.

Big Blue returns home for a non-league match with Colby College on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
