Amherst cruises to straight set win against UNE

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Amherst College defeated the University of New England, 3-0, in non-conference women's volleyball action Friday evening (Sep. 12) as day one of the Wildcat Classic concluded on the campus of Johnson & Wales University. Set scores were 25-12, 25-8, and 25-16.

The Lord Jeffs (4-2) received a combined 18 kills and six blocks from Marialexis Natsis, Maggie Danner, and Samantha Newby. Kate Bres led the squad with 10 assists, and Katie Warshaw totaled 17 digs to go with three aces.

Leading the way for the Nor'easters (2-5) was sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak with eight kills and three solo blocks. Seniors Rachel McGahie and Leah Janelle contributed seven and six kills, respectively. First-year Brooke Gibbons dialed up 18 assists and sophomore Nikki Mathewson had 10 digs.

The sides met opposite results earlier in the afternoon, and Amherst topped the host Wildcats and Keene State defeat UNE.

Play continues Saturday morning when Johnson & Wales and Big Blue meet for a 10 a.m. match. The championship and consolation contests are slated to follow at noon.
