BOSTON -- The University of New England Nor'easters scored a total of 58 runs on their way to a 37-1, 21-4 sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (March 25) at Carr Diamond.

Winners of seven of their last eight, the Nor'easters now stand at 8-4 (2-0 CCC). Wentworth drops to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

UNE's 37-run outburst in the opener was its highest scoring output since a 24-run showing versus Westbrook College during the 1995 season.

Senior Amanda Vaudreuil had eight hits and 10 runs batted in for the day, while first-year Sydney Helmbrecht contributed seven hits and eight RBI. Sophomore Kelly Murphy added four hits and knocked in six runs.

The Nor'easters set the tone at the outset of game one, sending 15 batters to the plate en route to nine runs. Murphy had a three-run triple to help fuel the onslaught, while Helmbrecht had a two-run single, and Big Blue took advantage of seven base on balls.

After Wentworth pushed across a run in the home half of the first on a double by Liz Glavin, UNE scored 10 times in the second to open up a 19-1 cushion. Big Blue would go on to tally eight in the third, nine in the fourth and a single run in the fifth before the contest was halted due to the eight-run rule.

Helmbrecht finished with five hits and seven RBI while Vaudreuil had four hits, including two doubles and a home run. Sophomore Jess Lemos had four hits, scored four times, and drove in four. First-years Kalie Hernandez and Sydney Farley chipped in three hits apiece.

Sophomore Abby Lambert earned the win to improve her record to 3-1. She allowed a hit and two walks over the first three innings before giving way to rookie Katelyn Austin, who worked two scoreless innings and fanned five.

The Nor'easters scored 10 runs over the initial two innings of game two on their way to completing the sweep. They only had one hit but took advantage of three walks and one Wentworth error. In the second, Vaudreuil had a two-RBI double.

Big Blue would go on to score six times in the third and five times in the fourth to induce the eight-run rule.

Vaudreuil capped a career day with four runs scored and four hits, including her second homer of the twinbill. Murphy, Helmbrecht and sophomore Amanda Vallante each had a pair of hits. Vallante and classmate Meghan Bolano combined for six runs batted in.

Sophomore Lauren Doneski (3-2) went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters.

The Nor'easters are scheduled to play their home-opener Thursday (March 27) when University of Southern Maine comes to Biddeford for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Claude Dubois Field.
