Big Blue records 8-0 win over Alfred State

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of New England scored six times over the the 2nd and 3rd innings on the way to an 8-0 shutout of Alfred State College in five innings on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 15) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

In the circle for UNE (1-1), sophomore Lauren Doneski fanned five, walked none, and surrendered just three hits to earn the victory.

Junior Adrienne Chase helped lead the offense with two singles and two RBI. First-year Sydney Helmbrecht drove in a pair with an RBI-single to right-center in the 3rd. Sophomore Kelly Murphy scored twice.

The Nor'easters survived two fielding errors and a single in the top of the 1st, and put one on the board in the bottom of the stanza when a double steal forced an Alfred State error and allowed graduate student Allie Frazier to score.

Doneski retired the Pioneers, in order, in the 2nd, and UNE plated three in the last half of the inning to go up 4-0. Frazier drew a bases-loaded walk to score Murphy. Following an out, Chase knocked in senior Jessica Potter and Helmbrecht with a single up the middle.

It was 5-0 before Helmbrecht came to the plate in the 3rd and brought in Murphy and senior Ali Stanley, and then another bases-loaded walk (by Doneski) pushed senior Amanda Vaudreuil across to bump the margin to eight in the 4th.

Ashlynn Nickerson took the loss for Alfred State (0-1).

The Nor'easters continue their Florida trip on Sunday morning with games against Nichols College and Smith College.
