Kayla Burgess captured three individual events to lead the University of New England women's swimming team to a 160-101 victory over Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 22) at the Campus Center.
Burgess touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.44), 100 freestyle (59.88), and 200 individual medley (2:30.77). In the freestyle, she edged first-year Megan Farmer of PSU by just less than a second; in the IM, Burgess was 0.48 ahead of classmate
Jordan Earley.
The Nor'easters (4-1) got two individual wins in support from junior
Rachael Romain, who clocked a 1:16.51 in the 100 breaststroke to best Panthers sophomore Addie Schumaker by 0.88 seconds. Romain also took the 200 breaststroke (2:39.15).
UNE also received first-place points from senior
Kelly Dolyak in the 1000 freestyle (11:46.30), sophomore
Lindsey Thomsen in the 100 backstroke (1:05.42), and senior
Emily Zeimetz in the 50 butterfly (28.78).
Plymouth State (0-2) had four wins on the day, from Farmer
(28.05 in the 50 freestyle), senior Sam Carberry (2:26.75 in the 200 backstroke), junior Kelly Merkle (2:18.44 in the 200 freestyle), and sophomore Katia Wyman (6:04.07 in the 500 freestyle). Farmer's race was the closest of the meet, as she narrowly out-stretched UNE sophomore
Eleni Bautz (28.10) for the victory.
Big Blue is off until January 16 when it hosts Saint Joseph's College (Maine). The Panthers get back to action in two weeks (Dec. 6) at the Little East Championships.
