UNE bests UMass Dartmouth for 2nd straight win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Lindsey Thomsen earned three individual victories to help power the University of New England women's swimming team to a 158-103 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1) at the Campus Center.

The win was the second straight for the Nor'easters, who improved to 2-0 in dual meets. UMass Dartmouth is now 1-1.

Thomsen was victorious in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.08), 50-yard freestyle (26.18) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.05). Her time in the 50-yard breaststroke was just .29 of a second off the school record and .32 of a second shy of the pool record. Thomsen also teamed with Emily Zeimetz, Rachael Romain and Eleni Bautz to win the 200-yard medley relay.

Kayla Burgess collected a pair of victories to help the Nor'easters' cause, winning the 50-yard butterfly (28.81) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.12). She also swam a leg of Big Blue's winning 200-yard free entry, teaming with Bautz, Zeimetz and Samantha Hanley.

Romain was first in the 500-yard free, posting a time of 5:51.13.

Jenna Leanues and Kaya Flanagan each won a pair of races for the Corsairs. Leanues was first in the 50-yard backstroke (32.93) and 100-yard back (1:11.67), and Flanagan was first in the 100-yard free (58.83) and 1000-yard free (11:55.81).

UMass Dartmouth hosts its first home meet of the 2014-15 season Tuesday (Nov. 4) versus Bridgewater State University. Start time is 6 p.m.

The Nor'easters return to action next Saturday (Nov. 8) when Simmons College comes to the Campus Center for a 1 p.m. meet.
