Leah Janelle and
Grayson Szczepaniak combined for 23 kills to power the University of New England women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-21, 25-14) over Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference match played Tuesday evening (Oct. 7) at the Harold Alfond Center.
The victory improves the Nor'easters' record to 6-11, while the Monks now stand at 5-13. The triumph extends UNE's win streak over St. Joe's to 28 consecutive matches.
Big Blue was in control from the outset, jumping out to a 14-4 lead on its way to an eight-point win in the first set. With the score tied at 16 in the second, UNE took advantage of threestraight St. Joe's errors to gain momentum and win the frame. The Nor'easters finished off the victory by pulling away in the finale after the score was knotted at eight.
Janelle tallied a match-high 12 kills to pace the winners. Szczepaniak played a strong all-around match with 11 kills, three aces and one block, while
Courtney Lambrese contributed eight kills and three blocks to the attack.
Brooke Gibbons dished out 35 assists to fuel the Nor'easters' attack.
Defensively, UNE was led by
Rachel McGahie, who dug out a match-high 17 balls. Janelle augmented her 12 kills with 16 digs and two blocks, and libero
Nikki Mathewson also reached double digits in digs with 12.
Jordynne Copp registered four kills and three solo blocks for the Monks.
The Nor'easters return to action Saturday when they host the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy for a tri-match beginning at 11 a.m.
