Courtney Lambrese both tallied 10 kills and factored in three blocks to help the University of New England to a 3-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference women's volleyball match played Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, and 25-16.
Big Blue improves to 7-12 with the decision, while the Mariners dip back to 8-10.
First-year
Brooke Gibbons notched 22 assists and a match-high 17 digs to aid the offense and defense for UNE. Sophomore
Nikki Mathewson chipped in with 10 digs.
After eight ties during the initial stages of the 1st set to where the score was locked at 10-10, the Nor'easters captured the ensuing 12 points with sophomore
Grayson Szczepaniak serving to assume control. Lambrese and senior
Rachel McGahie each had three winners in the run, while Szczepaniak tossed in two of her five service aces.
UNE utilized a 6-1 spurt in the 2nd to turn a two-point deficit (16-14) into an advantage. Though MMA managed to even things up at 21-all, two kills in the next five points from Lambrese pushed the hosts to a comfortable two-set edge. Big Blue then logged a 7-1 stretch to gain separation (14-8) in the 3rd, and never looked back.
For Maine Maritime, sophomore Gillian O'Neal had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Senior Sydney Robertson finished with eight winners and shared in three blocks with classmate Betsy Trenckmann, who dialed up 19 assists. Like O'Neal, junior Samantha Ryan accumulated 14 digs.
Earlier in the day, the two sides found opposite 3-1 results against the University of Southern Maine (MMA win, UNE loss).
The Nor'easters resume Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday, welcoming in Curry College for a 7 p.m. match. The Mariners host UMaine Fort Kent the same evening.
