Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine pocketed four goals in the middle period to turn a one-goal deficit towards a 6-2 ECAC East League men's ice hockey victory over the University of New England on Friday evening (Jan. 31) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the win, the Huskies bring an end to their 13-game winless streak (with 5 ties) to improve to 5-11-5 overall and 4-8-2 in league action. The loss sets the Nor'easters (8-12-1) back to 5-9-0 in ECAC East games.

First-year Kelby Lorenz registered a pair of markers to pace USM, including what proved to be the game-winner on the power play with 12 minutes gone in the 2nd frame. Classmate Cole Klippenstein scored the equalizer just three minutes before, and set up Lorenz for his second tally.

Also finding the back of the net for Southern Maine was senior Jamie Osborne, junior Sam Guimond, and sophomore Zach Dymock. Junior Ryan Seward notched three assists, and sophomore Alex Pompeo chipped in with two helpers.

It was UNE that struck first just past the midway point of the 1st period, as junior Nick Kolb scored with assists going to first-year David Goff and sophomore Sam Vikich.

After Lorenz tied it up 2:45 later (13:48), Big Blue first-year Trevor Fleurent put the hosts back in front at the 14:37 mark. Junior Jared Melman and sophomore Tom Gildersleeve assisted on the play.

The opening 20 minutes ended with a 2-1 margin in favor of UNE, while the Huskies totaled a slim 15-14 edge in shots.

Southern Maine first-year goalie Dylan Wells shut down the Nor'easters the rest of the way, ending the night with 33 saves. The visitors also made the most of their three 2nd-period power plays, converting on each one.

On the opposite side of the rink, junior Colby Drost stopped 27 shots for Big Blue.

Both sides head for Massachusetts next weekend to face nationally-ranked foes in Babson College and the University of Massachusetts-Boston. While the Nor'easters will look for the season sweep of the No. 6 Beavers on Friday, the Huskies will be squaring off with the No. 14 Beacons.
