Post-Game Interview
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior
Kelly Coleman and sophomore
Sadie DiPierro combined for 17 straight points during a 20-0 run inside the final 10 minutes of regulation to power the University of New England to a 60-48 come-from-behind victory over Colby College in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening (Nov. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The rally helped the Nor'easters improve to 4-0 on the season, heading into a non-league road date on Tuesday (6 p.m.) at Bowdoin College -- which currently sits at 3-0, with a game this weekend.
Big Blue still faced its halftime deficit of eight with a little more than 10 minutes to play (41-33) before things started to turn around. Within 2:17 the Colby advantage was gone, as Coleman knocked down a three-pointer, DiPierro grabbed a steal for a breakaway layup, Coleman added a free throw, and DiPierro connected from long range to make it 42-41 in favor of the hosts.
Another theft and uncontested lay-in by DiPierro, followed by a trio of baskets in the paint from Coleman, gave UNE a nine-point cushion (50-41) at the 5:58 mark. After a few minutes, senior
Megan DeRaps capped the stretch with a trey from the right wing, and the margin of 12 (53-41) held through to the finish.
Coleman ended the night with a career-best 24 points behind 9-of-14 shooting from the floor, and collected a game-high nine rebounds as well. Sophomore
Alanna Vose contributed 10 points and five assists, while DiPierro totaled nine points and four steals. First-year
Brooke Flaherty did not miss on two shots and four free throws to finish with eight points.
The Mules (2-1) were led by senior Jen Nale with 14 points, and sophomore Carylanne Wolfinton chipped in with 10. Senior Gabe Donahue pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and sophomore Mia Diplock snagged seven steals for the visitors, who were up by as many as 12 during the opening 20 minutes on the way to a 32-24 lead midway through.
Much like the Nor'easters did in the first half (31% field goals, 11 turnovers), Colby struggled after intermission, finding the range on just 20 percent of its shots (5 for 25) and committing 13 turnovers.
On Friday (6 p.m.), the Mules will look to rebound with their home opener against Thomas College.
