Nor'easters rally to spoil Potsdam home-opener

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Trailing 3-1 late in the second period, the University of New England Nor'easters stormed back to score five unanswered goals on their way to a 6-3 non-league men's ice hockey win over SUNY Potsdam before a sellout crowd of 1,124 at the newly-renovated Maxcy Ice Arena.

The victory gives the Nor'easters (1-0-1) a successful three-point weekend on their New York swing. The Bears (0-2-0) suffered their second loss in as many nights.

Maxcy Ice Arena Opening

It appeared as if the Bears would ride the emotion of a capacity crowd and grand re-opening of their facility, as they scored three of the game's first four goals to grab a 3-1 second-period advantage. Dan McCamey scored short-handed in the first for Potsdam, then Adam Place tallied an early power-play goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of the hosts.

After UNE's Jared Melman cut the deficit in half, Todd Thomas scored with a man advantage to give the Bears a 3-1 cushion.

Big Blue would seize momentum, however, tallying twice over the final 4:18 of the second frame. Zeth Zielinksi and David Goff did the scoring during that stretch, and the game was tied headed to the third.

The final period was all UNE, with goals coming from Zach Lokey, Sean Sullivan and Zielinski. Lokey's game-winner came just 49 seconds into the stanza, and Zielinski's was an empty-netter in the final minute.

Both UNE's Colby Drost and Potsdam's Austin Keiser had 31 saves. The teams combined for 18 penalties, with the Bears going 2-for-5 on the power play.

The Nor'easters have nearly a week off before heading west again to open up ECAC Men's East play next Friday and Saturday with games at Skidmore College and Castleton State College.
