WATERVILLE, Maine -- Ian Deveau scored five times to lead Colby College to a 15-7 non-conference victory over the University of New England in men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 3) at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules pull their overall record even at 3-3 with the win, while the Nor'easters drop back to 6-6 on the season.
Jonathan McIvor added three points (2 goals, 1 assist) for the hosts, and Garth Franklin also had a pair of scores. Bjorn Knutson claimed 14 of the 19 face-offs he took, and picked up a team-best eight ground balls.
After Deveau opened the scoring 2:04 into the 1st period, UNE junior
Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) found first-year
Eddie Burke (Windsor, Conn.) eight seconds later to level the contest. The duo switched roles to give the visitors the edge (2-1) at the 10:50 mark.
A few minutes later Colby tied the game at 2-all, only to see
Tyler Thomas convert a feed from older brother
Dylan Thomas 13 ticks later and restore the one-goal Big Blue margin.
The Mules finished off the period with three unanswered, and tacked on two more to begin the 2nd and establish a 7-3 cushion. The difference was still four (9-5) at the halftime break, before Colby notched five goals to UNE's one in the 3rd to gain a comfortable lead.
Like Burke, senior
Mike Pennacchio (Peabody, Mass.) and first-year
Geoff Bruno (Durham, Conn.) also finished the day with both a goal and an assist. Sophomore Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) gathered a game-high 10 ground balls.
In goal for Colby, starter Peter Reiley played the initial 42 minutes to make six saves, before giving way to Tyler Will for the next 16 minutes -- who also recorded six stops.
UNE senior netminder
Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) posted seven saves for the Nor'easters, who play their first home match in 25 days on Saturday against Nichols College (12 p.m.).
The Mules entertain Wesleyan University (Conn.) the same day.
