DANBURY, Conn. -- Senior Ryan Gillis (Norwich, Conn.) scored five times, and classmate Tyler Martone (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied a total of 17 saves to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to an 8-5 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Saturday afternoon Mar. 24) at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The win improves the Colonials' record to 5-2, while the Nor'easters fall to 5-4.
After an early second-period goal by UNE senior
Matt Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.) tied the score at 3-all, Gillis rattled off a trio of markers in the frame to help the hosts establish a 6-3 advantage heading into intermission.
Neither team was able to find the scoring column in the third period, but Western Connecticut notched the first two goals of the final quarter to build an insurmountable 8-3 cushion.
Gillis, who added a pair of assists to have a hand in seven of his team's eight scores, now has 20 goals on the season.

Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) had four saves for the Nor'easters, who play a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match under the lights at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
Western Connecticut is idle until next Saturday when it heads to UMass Dartmouth.
