Box Score
BABSON PARK, Mass. – First-year Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) scored the game-winning goal just 44 seconds into overtime to lift Babson College to a 4-3 victory over the University of New England in an ECAC East men's ice hockey matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, the Beavers improve to 8-12-3 overall and 8-5-3 in league play. The Nor'easters dip to 3-17-2 on the season and 1-15-0 in ECAC East contests.
Babson recorded the only score of the first period, as junior Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) put in a shot from the left side of the crease at 5:39.
UNE tied the game 1:17 into the second, when senior
Ted Fabian (Oakland, Maine) dropped the puck off to classmate
Kyle MacLennan (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia), who fired a wrister from the top of the right circle inside the near post for his first goal of the season. First-year
Fred Hein (North Reading, Mass.) also assisted on the play.
The Beavers would regain the advantage during a 5-on-3 power play with 12:28 gone in the middle frame. After a slap shot from the left side clanged off the left post, first-year Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) collected the rebound on the right side and dropped in his seventh goal of the year.
Senior Dan Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) scored another power-play goal for Babson early in the third period (1:41) to increase the margin to 3-1 -- a lead that held until the Nor'easters rallied with less than six minutes left in regulation.
With 5:46 to go, sophomore
John Tuell (Orono, Maine) received connecting passes from senior
Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia) and junior
Adam Laite (Howie Center, Nova Scotia) and blasted a slapper inside the left post.
Then 2:03 later, first-year
Shayne Toohey (Beaconsfield, Quebec) netted the equalizer on a screened wristshot from the right point that found the upper right corner. McManaman and first-year
Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif.) were each credited with assists on the play, which eventually sent the game into overtime.
Bonazza's marker in the extra session came on the first shot from either side -- a drive from the bottom of the left circle.
Senior goaltender Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with 20 saves in the victory for the Beavers, while his counterpart, sophomore
Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.), turned away 29 shots in net for UNE.
Both teams wrap up the regular-season next weekend. Babson heads for Vermont to face Saint Michael's College (Friday) and nationally-ranked Norwich University (Saturday), and Big Blue returns home to square off against Saint Anselm College (Friday) and New England College (Saturday).
