UNE breezes past Norwich, falls to Bates, in tri meet

LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of New England women's swimming team split its results Saturday afternoon at Tarbell Pool, defeating Norwich University by a 106-16 margin and suffering a 116-38 setback to Bates College.

Big Blue is now 6-1 on the season in dual or tri events.

Three seniors combined to register all four of the Nor'easters' event wins. Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) claimed a pair of races, coming in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.12) and 100 freestyle (56.77). Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) had a first-place showing in the 100 backstroke (1:04.37), and came in second during the 200 free. Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) finished 0.40 seconds clear of the next fastest competitor to take the 100 breaststroke (1:12.34).

Sophomore Jenn LaComfora (Worcester, Mass.) placed second on two ocassions, and was nearly second in a third event. Her time of 30.88 in the 50 back was a mere 0.09 ticks off the lead pace, and the 106.58 in the 100 individual medley was also less than one second behind the victor. In Sweeney's 100 back triumph, LaComfora touched 0.10 (1:06.24) out of the runner-up position.

Junior Amy Miele (Queensbury, N.Y.) had a second and a third to her credit on the day. She posted a 28.60 time in the 50 fly for the second-place finish, and a 26.28 in the 50 free for the third. Classmate Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) also had a third-place showing, touching the wall just after LaComfora in the 50 back (30.95) -- 0.17 out of the winner's circle.

Bates swimmer Catherine Sparks matched Wareham as the only multiple winners in the meet, as six other Bobcats claimed events. The hosts move to 4-1 on the year, and the other institution in the cometition, Norwich, is now 0-5.

UNE returns to action next Saturday with a visit to Gordon College.
