Nor'easters swim past Saint Joseph's to get eighth win

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England women's swimming team won eight of the first 10 individual races on its way to a 144-90 victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at the Harold Alfond Center Monday afternoon.

Seniors Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) and Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) each earned two of those wins for the Nor'easters, who are now 8-1 on the year. Shea claimed the 400-yard individual medley in 5:04.48, and then the 200 breaststroke in 2:40.52. Wareham captured two freestyle events -- the 100 free (56.73) and 200 free (2:09.95).

Another senior, Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.), took the 200 backstroke in 2:17.74, and finished just 0.20 seconds behind the Monks' Mandy Avella (27.64) in the 50 free.

Juniors Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) and Amy Miele (Queensbury, N.Y.), along with first-year Emily Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.), all won races for Big Blue to cap the day's effort. Arsenault won the 100 back in 1:07.19, Miele triumphed in the 100 breast (1:15.17), and Zeimetz touched the wall first for her first collegiate win in the 50 butterfly (30.36).

St. Joe's (2-4), in addition to Avella, got a victory from Hannah Gajewski in the 500 free.

UNE heads to Roger Williams University for its next meet on Saturday (1 p.m.).
