Big Blue swims to 7th place at NEISDA Championships

Lizzie Wareham had another fabulous showing, which included four new team records

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- The University of New England women's swimming team competed at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships this weekend at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center, and came away with a seventh-place finish out of the 21 competing teams. Junior Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) and Co. totaled seven all-New England performances and set eight new team records during the three-day meet.

Bentley University collected the team title, accumulating a total of 1,507 points. Keene State College (1,195.5), Assumption College (1,029), Roger Williams University (884), and Eastern Connecticut State University (836) rounded out the top five.

Wareham earned all-New England (top 8) status in three events during the weekend, sprinting to second-place showings in both the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly races, and third place in the 100 butterfly. In addition, she brought down the UNE team records in those events, as well as the 100 freestyle -- which she posted during the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay.

Going into the weekend, Wareham previously held all four records that she broke in the ensuing days. In the 50 butterfly, she lowered the initial 28.02 to 26.91 with her time in the preliminary heat, then dropped the mark even further (26.31) later in the final. The Osterville, Mass. native did the same double-up in the 100 butterfly, taking the 1:00.11 down in the prelims (59.55) and then again in the final (58.91) of the event. In the fastest event of the meet (50 free) she punched a time of 24.23 -- 0.25 better than her previous mark and a mere 0.13 seconds away from an NCAA B-Cut.

Junior Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) put forth an all-New England performance in the 1,650 freestyle, clocking a record-setting time of 18:34.18 to finish in fourth place. Not only did her time best that of Alison Leopard's 19:21.87 from back in 2008-09 campaign, but her 1,000-yard split of 11:13.78 also knocked Leopard from the record books. Sweeney also touched the wall in the 200 backstroke in 2:15.07, besting Cassie Doherty's 2:19.60 set back in 2005-06 season.

Notching two all-New England efforts to go with a new team record was junior Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.). She edged her own school mark of 5:01.41 in the 400 individual medley with a 4:59.22 time that was good for seventh place. Shea also took seventh in the 200 breaststroke.

First-year Alex Gabriels (East Greenbush, N.Y.) registered all-New England status by taking eighth place in the 100 individual medley, which was contested Sunday evening.

The Nor'easters conclude the 2010-11 season with a 7-2 record in dual meets, and runner-up finishes at the TCCC Invitational and the Regis Invitational.
