BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England women's swimming team finished second of five institutions at the Snowball Invitational hosted by Roger Williams University at the Aquatics Center, as RWU claimed the team title with 695.5 points, ahead of UNE's 482.
Senior
Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) and sophomore Jenn LaComfora (Worcester, Mass.) won three events apiece over the two-day meet, while seniors
Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) and
Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) added two wins and one win, respectively, to the cause.
Wareham claimed the 50-yard freestyle in 25.28, 0.40 seconds faster than the next best time. Her victory in the 100 free was even tighter, as just 0.31 seconds separated her (55.17) from second place. Wareham also got the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.90, in front of junior teammate
Amy Miele (Queensbury, N.Y.).
LaComfora kicked off her efforts in the meet with a team record-setting performance (2:19.77) in the 200-yard IM, bettering the previous mark held by Shea by one second. She proceeded to take the 100- (1:04.48) and 200-yard (2:17.39) backstroke events, touching ahead to Sweeney in both, with junior
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) coming in third.
Shea's wins came in a pair of breaststroke races -- the 100- (1:11.60) and 200-yard (2:33.16) variety. Her decision in the 100 breast was by a mere 0.38 seconds. She also finished second in the 400-yard IM.
Sweeney breezed to a win in the 1,650 free (19:43.81), hitting the wall 28 seconds faster than the next closest competitor.
Additionally, three relay teams captured events and two other finished as runners-up. Both medley squads (featuring LaComfora, Shea, Wareham, and Miele) posted program-record times, with the 200-yard (1:57.23) being 0.09 seconds better, and the 400-yard (4:16.47) being 0.42 seconds faster. UNE also won the 400 free relay in 3:53.24 (Miele,
Rachel Hanley, LaComfora, and Wareham).
Colby-Sawyer College (285.5), Western New England University (235), and Gordon College (182) rounded out the field in the team scoring.
The Nor'easters host the Golden Bears in a dual meet next Saturday (12 p.m.).
