BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's swimming team won nine of 12 individual events and both relay races to defeat the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, 167-95, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
Senior
Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) led the way with three wins, capturing the 200-yard freestyle, the 50 free, and the 50 butterfly. Her victory in the 200 free (2:06.97) came by a mere 0.12 seconds over Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, Mass.) -- the closest event of the day. She edged out UMD's Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, Mass.) by just under a second in the 50 fly (28.66), and touched ahead of classmate
Nori McLeod (Wiscasset, Maine) in the 50 free (26.73).
UNE sophomore Jenn LaComfora (Worcester, Mass.) and senior
Sara Shea (Peabody, Mass.) added twice wins apiece. LaComfora led a trio of Nor'easters in the 50 backstroke with a time of 30.40, as senior
Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.) and junior
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) clocked in 0.73 and 0.81 seconds back. Her 2:21.26 in the 200 IM was also good enough for first place, with Shea close behind. Shea flipped the decision in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:12.81, and finished in front of junior
Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine) with a 33.68 in the 50 breast.
Sweeney registered a win of her own in the 100 back with a time of 1:04.81, as Arsenault finished in second. Junior
Amy Miele (Queensbury, N.Y.) tallied the remaining individual victory for UNE (2-0), posting a time of 1:04.75 in the 100 fly to nip UMD's Cooper by 0.74 seconds.
The Corsairs (0-2) claimed the two distance freestyle events courtesy of Kidney in the 500 (5:40.26) and senior Kim Moore (Billerica, Mass.) in the 1,000 (12:00.79). Cooper touched ahead of Miele by 1.02 seconds in the 100 free (57.77) for the visitor's third win.
The Nor'easters head to Husson University next Saturday (Nov. 19).
