Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Fourteenth-ranked Bowdoin College tied a program record with eight first-half three-pointers and built a 29-9 cushion midway through the opening frame, on its way to a 69-53 non-conference women's basketball victory over the University of New England at Morrell Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears -- owning a spot in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll -- improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Nor'easters suffer their first loss in three outings (2-1).

Senior Jill Henrikson (Bath, Maine) led the way for Bowdoin's starting unit -- which accounted for all of the team's scoring -- with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and seven steals. Junior Kaitlyn Donahue (Amherst, N.Y.) added 15 points and five assists, while senior Ellery Gould (East Sandwich, Mass.) chipped in with 14 points and six caroms. Senior Amy Hackett (Bangor, Maine) also reached double figures with 12 points.

For UNE, senior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) tallied a team-high 17 points, to go with seven rebounds and four blocks. First-year Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) came off the bench to finish one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards.

Senior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) scored all seven of her points on free throws in the second half -- the first of which moved her into sole possession of second place on the career list of free throws made, out of a tie at 386 with Missy Stults '04.

Gould pumped in 12 points in the initial 20 minutes to help get the hosts started, as Bowdoin drained six of its first 10 attempts from behind the arc to establish the early advantage. Gould converted her first three tries from deep on the night.

Down by as many as 20 in the first period (29-9), the Nor'easters slowly ran off eight unanswered points, courtesy of Coleman and Paradis. UNE settled on a 14-point deficit (37-23) at the break.

The margin fluctuated between 14 and 20 as the second half began, until a 7-0 spurt from Big Blue trimmed the Bowdoin lead back down to 12 (52-40) with 7:35 to go, but UNE could not get any closer.

The Polar Bears are off until next Tuesday (Nov. 29), when they visit the University of Southern Maine. The Nor'easters get back to action the next day (Nov. 30) with the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener on the road against Wentworth Institute of Technology (5:30 p.m.).
