Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Western New England University converted 4 of 5 shootout attempts to advance past top-seeded University of New England in a quarterfinal round match of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods.

The eighth-seeded Golden Bears (4-13-3) will travel to No. 4 Endicott College in a semifinal round game on Wednesday. UNE (12-2-3) awaits word on a likely ECAC Championship bid with that announcement to be made Monday, Nov. 7.

The teams traded conversions in the opening two rounds of the shootout with seniors Morgan Vogt (Henniker, N.H.) and Sara McMurray (Enfield, Conn.) of WNE and sophomore Casey Scott (North Adams, Mass.) and senior Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) of UNE finding the back of the net.

The story in the third round was the goalkeepers as Golden Bear sophomore Victoria Trezise (Islip, N.Y.) and UNE first-year Sarah Papapietro (Bonita, Calif.) came up with stops to keep the shootout tally 2-all.

Senior Mallorie Nai (West Suffield, Conn.) gave WNE the advantage for good in the fourth round, drilling a shot just under the crossbar. The Nor'easters fourth-round attempt sailed wide, setting up the clinching conversion by Western New England senior Julia Hadden (North Smithfield, R.I.).

The Nor'easters had forced overtime in the final minute of regulation when senior Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) controlled a loose ball and booted it into the net with 37 seconds remaining. Dvorak's first tally of the season came after a UNE free kick.

With neither team creating many quality scoring opportunities most of the afternoon, the Golden Bears broke the ice in the 33rd minute on Vogt's marker from close range. Vogt had took advantage of a cross from the left flank that deflected off a UNE defender.

Big Blue nearly won the contest in the first overtime, but WNE first-year back Gabrielle Bates (Wilbraham, Mass.) cleared a UNE shot that had reached the goal mouth with Trezise off her line.

Trezise finished with four saves, while senior Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) recorded a pair for the Nor'easters during regulation and the two overtime periods.

For the match, the Nor'easters led 18-7 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.
