WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England held Gordon College to 31 points under its season average by forcing 30 turnovers and allowing only 21.3 percent shooting, coming away with a 77-29 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory in women's basketball action Wednesday evening from the Bennett Center.
The Nor'easters topped Gordon for the seventh straight time, improving to 19-5 overall (10-2 TCCC). The Fighting Scots (9-15, 2-10 TCCC) suffered a setback for the seventh consecutive outing.
Sophomores
Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) and
Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) combined with first-year
Michelle Williams (South Berwick, Maine) off the bench to account for 40 of UNE's points. Russell made 7-of-10 shot attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 14 points. Paradis and Williams also made up for nearly half of Big Blue's 19 steals, with five and four, respectively.
First-year
Eden Cianciolo (Fryeburg, Maine) collected a game-high eight rebounds for the Nor'easters, who out-rebounded their opponents, 47-30.
All 11 players in uniform found their way into the scoring column for UNE, which shot 47 percent (31 for 66) for the game.
Senior guard Kim Levinsky (West Caldwell, N.J.) was the only Gordon player in double figures with 12 points. Classmate Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) went for seven points and seven boards.
After exchanging baskets in the early moments of action, a dozen unanswered points from the Nor'easters put the visitors in complete control (17-5) with over 12 minutes left in the first half. By halftime, the cushion was 25 (41-16), as UNE shot 51.3 percent (16 of 31) in the opening frame.
The Nor'easters pulled even further away with the first 10 points of the second stanza, setting up Saturday's key matchup at Nichols College (1 p.m.). UNE is still in a three-way tie for first in the TCCC with Endicott College and Regis College entering the final day of the regular-season.
The Fighting Scots concluded their season at home against Salve Regina University.
