Shooting woes sink Nor'easters against Colby-Sawyer

Kari Pelletier led UNE on the defensive end with a career-best six steals

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore guard Maggie Rossi (Fairhaven, Mass.) tallied 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting to lead Colby-Sawyer College to a 61-51 The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball victory over the University of New England Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.

The Chargers won for the third straight outing, improving to 10-13 overall (7-4 TCCC). The loss snaps the four-game winning streak for the Nor'easters, who now stand at 18-5 overall. UNE (9-2 TCCC) falls back into a three-way tie with Endicott College and Regis College for first place in the conference.

Rossi added eight rebounds and four assists to go with her game-high point total. Senior forward Terri Duffey (Marshfield, Mass.) collected a double-double with 12 points and 16 boards.

The Nor'easters were led by sophomore Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) who finished with 15 points and four steals. Classmate Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) chipped in with 11 points -- including 7-of-10 from the free throw line -- and picked up a career-high six steals.

UNE struggled shooting the ball, converting just 19.4 percent (13-for-67) of its attempts from the field and a mere eight percent (2 of 25) from long range.

As a result, Colby-Sawyer held a 54-33 advantage on the glass.

The Chargers jumped out to a 10-2 lead 3:26 into the contest. The cushion grew to as many as 11 (20-9) midway through the period, before the Nor'easters cut the margin to three (24-21) with 3:35 left in the half. Rossi scored the final to baskets of the opening frame to take a 28-21 lead at intermission.

Trailing 32-27 less than three minutes into the second stanza, UNE used a 7-0 spurt to take its only lead of the game with 13:43 to play. Colby-Sawyer responded over the next six minutes with eight unanswered points to re-take control, 40-34.

The Nor'easters would get as close as two (42-40) with 5:40 on the clock, but the Chargers made 12 of 13 attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

Colby-Sawyer, who defeated UNE for the eighth time in the last 10 meetings between the two teams, prevailed despite committing 29 turnovers for the game. The hosts only coughed it up 10 times.

The Chargers return home for their final two regular-season contests, and are scheduled to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday.

The Nor'easters travel to Gordon College the same day for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
