Maybury's late goal pulls Penmen past Nor'easters

HOOKSETT, N.H,. -- Senior Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 4:50 remaining, to lead host Southern New Hampshire University to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in an opening-round game of the PAL Stovepipe Tournament Saturday afternoon at Ice Den Arena.

Trailing 4-3 after a goal by sophomore Tyler Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) had given the Nor'easters a 4-3 lead at 9:17 of the third period, the Penmen responded quickly when senior William Toomey (Reading, Mass.) scored 29 seconds later to tie the score at four.

Maybury's decisive goal -- which came on the power play -- was set-up by Toomey and senior Kevin Danie (Feeding Hills, Mass.).

The host Penmen led 1-0 after a period on Maybury's first goal of the game, a power-play goal 3:57 into the contest.

Southern New Hampshire pushed its lead to 3-0 in the early stages of the second frame on scores by junior Doug Boulanger (Beauport, Quebec) and sophomore Chris Hickey (Gilford, N.H.).

First-year Matt Del Giudice (Oakland, Maine) got UNE on the scoreboard midway thru the second period, then Big Blue stormed out of second intermission with three goals in the opening 6:22 of the third to assume a 4-3 advantage. Sophomore Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia) pulled UNE within one before Fleurent registered consecutive markers to give the Nor'easters the lead.

Fiirst-year Sean Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) had three assists and sophomore Russ Franey (York, Maine) added two for the Nor'easters, who led 39-28 in shots on goal, including a 21-9 bulge in the final period.

Senior goaltender Mike Roper (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) had 23 saves for UNE, while first-year Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) registered 35 for the Penmen (2-4).

UNE (0-3) will play Salve Regina University in tomorrow's 1:30 p.m. consolation game. SNHU will face UMass Boston for the championship at 4:30 p.m.
