Quentin Thompson (Austin, Texas) and
Anthony Johnson (Austin, Texas) combined for 37 points and 15 rebounds to help lead the Nor'easters to an 86-65 men's basketball victory over Anna Maria College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
Thompson scored a game-high 19 points to go with nine boards, seven assists and three steals. Johnson made 7 of 11 field goal attempts on his way to 18 points. First-year forward
Anthony Coleman (Austin, Texas) chipped in 11 points, seven caroms, four steals and three blocked shots off the bench.
Junior guard Chris Pinsonault (Marlboro, Mass.) was the lone Anna Maria player in double figures. He scored 10 points and added four steals.
The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes. With the scored knotted at 30 and 6:09 remaining, the Nor'easters outscored Anna Maria 14-5 to take a 44-35 cushion into the locker room. Johnson and first-year #J.D. Winn# (Austin, Texas) combined for nine points during the spurt.
The Nor'easters continued to roll in the opening portion of the second half, using a 22-9 run over the initial 9:30 to take a commanding 66-44 lead. Johnson and Thompson had 13 points during the surge.
UNE's lead crested at 30 (76-46) before the Amcats pecked away over the final 6:07.
The Nor'easters' pressure defense came up with 16 steals on 34 Anna Maria turnovers. UNE also got to the foul line 48 times as the visitors were whistled for 31 fouls.
Next up for Big Blue (6-9, 3-2 TCCC) is a non-conference home game with Husson University on Tuesday. Tip-off time is 7 p.m.
Anna Maria (6-11, 1-4) returns to action Thursday when it plays host to Curry College at 8 p.m.
