WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England Nor'easters opened the game on an 18-0 run on their way to an easy 73-44 The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball win Wednesday evening at the Bennett Center.
The victory improves the Nor'easters' overall record to 18-6, UNE's highest win output since the 1990-91 season. The Nor'easters will take an 11-1 conference mark into Saturday's clash with Nichols College, which is unbeaten in TCCC play (12-0) and has won 21 consecutive contests overall.
This game was never in doubt as the Nor'easters held Gordon scoreless over the opening 6:09 while making 8 of their first 11 field goal attempts. Sophomore Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) and first-year forward Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) had 12 of UNE's 18 points during the barrage.
The Nor'easters led 44-17 at the break after shooting 57.6 percent (19 of 33) from the floor and forcing 13 Fighting Scot turnovers.
UNE used its bench liberally in the second frame, with no player seeing more than 24 minutes of floor time for the evening and all 11 players in uniform playing at least nine minutes.
Bunnell scored a game-high 17 points to lead the way for UNE. She made three 3-pointers and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Russell chipped in with 15 points. Senior point guard Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) handed out seven assists and had three steals.
Gordon (4-20, 3-9 TCCC) shot just 34.8 percent (16 of 46) from the floor and turned the ball over 28 times.
