UNE cruises to 30-point win over UMaine Farmington

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-2 lead six minutes into the contest and never looked back, defeating the University of Maine-Farmington, 80-50, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.

Sophomore Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) recorded a team-high 12 points for the Nor'easters (6-3), who had eight players score at least six points. Junior Chelsey Meszaros (North Clarendon, Vt.) came off the bench for 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the field.

First-years Liz LeBlanc (Jay, Maine) and Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) each chipped in with 10 points off the UNE bench, which out-scored UMF's, 45-13.

Senior Katie Diggins (Merrimack, N.H.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, and first-year Eden Cianciolo (Fryeburg, Maine) collected eight boards. Classmate Michelle Williams (South Berwick, Maine), the only UNE player to log more than 20 minutes of playing time, dished out seven assists and picked up three steals.

The Beavers (1-5) were led by junior Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) who tallied a game-high 14 points. Classmate Brittany York (Strong, Maine) added eight points and six caroms.

The Nor'easters held a 40-17 advantage at intermission, thanks in large part to 16 turnovers and 26.3 percent (5-for-19) shooting by the visitors. The rebounding margin was 26-16 at the half in favor of UNE -- 13-3 on the offensive end -- and the hosts out-scored UMaine Farmington in the paint, 26-6.

In the second frame, the UNE lead never dipped below 21 (46-25). The Nor'easters forced 29 UMF turnovers in the game, and finished with a 38-11 cushion in points off turnovers.

Both teams are off until after the holidays. The Nor'easters host Bates College on January 2 (1 p.m.), while the Beavers entertain Plymouth State University on January 7 (6 p.m.).
