Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore guard Victor Oruonyehu (Austin, Texas) scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half as the University of New England built a 49-28 lead, and the Nor'easters cruised the rest of the way to an 81-67 men's basketball victory in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.

The victory, which snapped a five-game UNE (3-6) losing skid, was the Nor'easters' 16th consecutive win at the Campus Center. The Beavers suffered their sixth setback in as many outings.

Sophomore forward Quentin Thompson (Austin, Texas) scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way for the Nor'easters. Joining Thompson and Oruonyehu in double figures was sophomore guard Anthony Johnson (Austin, Texas) with 12 points, along with senior guard Marchale Robinson (Baton Rouge, La.) who added 11.

Senior center Josh Tanguay (Gorham, Maine) tallied game highs of 21 points and 11 boards for the Beavers. Tanguay was 9-for-13 from the floor. Junior forward Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) and classmate Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) chipped in 11 points apiece. Taylor snagged nine caroms to help UMF to a 36-28 cushion on the glass.

After the Nor'easters scored the first five points of the contest, the Beavers responded with a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead. Two free throws by Thompson put UNE back on top, but Tanguay converted down low to give UMF an 8-7 lead, which would prove to be its final advantage of the contest.

From there, the Big Blue forged a 18-4 run to take a 25-12 lead at the 11:03 mark. Robinson scored eight points during the spurt, including a pair of three-pointers.

The Beavers would score the next three points to get the deficit back to single digits, but the Nor'easters responded with a 16-5 surge to establish a 20-point (41-21) pad with six minutes left in the frame.

The hosts shot 51.6 percent (16 of 31) from the floor over the opening 20 minutes while forcing 16 UMF turnovers.

The Nor'easters led comfortably the entire second stanza, seeing their lead crest at 26 (78-52) with 3:55 remaining before settling on the final margin of 14.

UNE, which made seven treys in each half, was credited with 11 steals on 27 Beaver turnovers. UMF shot an even 50 percent (27 of 54) for the contest.

Each team is off until after the holidays. UMaine Farmington resumes play Jan. 7 with a home contest versus Plymouth State University, while the Nor'easters host the Jim Beaudry Classic on Jan. 2-3.
