Nor'easters snap two-game skid with win over Wheaton

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England used a 16-2 run midway through the second half to separate itself from Wheaton College en route to a 69-60 victory in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center.

Leading 40-39 with 13:18 left in regulation, the Nor'easters increased the cushion to 15 (58-43) by the 8:26 mark. Sophomore Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) scored all five of her points during the spurt.

The margin never dropped below nine points the rest of the way.

Wheaton was in front for the majority of the first half, gaining leads of as many as five twice during opening 10 minutes. Senior Andrea Bailey (Needham, Mass.) and first-year Jeana Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) combined to drain 7 of 10 from long range before intermission to pace the Lyons early on.

UNE grabbed its first lead of the contest (22-21) with 7:13 remaining in the half, and the hosts would not trail again, taking a 35-30 edge into the break.

Sophomore Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine), who tallied 13 of her team-high 17 in the first half, also pulled down eight boards. Classmate Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Nor'easters, who out-rebounded their opponents 46-33 for the game.

Senior Katie Diggins (Merrimack, N.H.) and sophomore Lyndie Libby (Buxton, Maine) added 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Libby also dished out five helpers.

For Wheaton, senior Ida Kruse (Vershire, Vt.) led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds. Trimboli finished with 13, and Bailey chipped in with 12, six assists, and six boards. Senior Jenny Champney (Bedford, Mass.) played a solid all-around game, going for 12 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

UNE (4-2), which snapped a two-game skid with the win, travels to Husson University Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-conference match. Losers of three straight, the Lyons (1-3) will look to start NEWMAC play on the right foot Wednesday at Babson College.
