Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior point guard Kadare Brown (Baton Rouge, La.) had 21 points, four assists and three steals to lead the University of New England to a 82-70 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine before a crowd of 595 Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Brown was 7-for-8 from the free throw line on his way to a team-high 21 points. Sophomore Anthony Johnson (Austin, Texas) chipped in 17 points and a team-best five assists for the Nor'easters (1-1), while senior guard Marchale Robinson (Baton Rouge, La.) finished with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Quentin Thompson (Austin, Texas) posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Junior guard Cortez Isaac (Washington, D.C.) poured in a game-high 30 points -- 18 in the second half --to lead the way for the 0-1 Huskies. He also grabbed a team-high nine boards and dished out five assists. Junior guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine) contributed 17 points and junior forward Otis Smith (Alamonte Springs, Fla.) added 10.

With the score tied at 55-55 and just over nine minutes on the clock, the Nor'easters scored seven unanswered points to take control. Brown made a pair of free throws then a three-ball to start the spurt, which was capped by a Thompson lay-up at 7:43 to give UNE a 62-55 lead.

The Huskies would get no closer than five (64-59) the rest of the way. Brown tallied six points over the final 1:48 to help seal the victory.

Both teams struggled offensively over the opening 10 minutes of the contest, but were able to get things going heading into intermission. The Nor'easters led 43-34 at the break, thanks in part to eight treys and a defense that induced 13 Husky turnovers.

The Nor'easters return to action this Friday and Saturday when they head to UMass Dartmouth for a two-day affair. UNE will open up with the nationally-ranked hosts Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Southern Maine will face Becker College (8 p.m.) that same evening in the opening round of the Wesleyan University Invitational.
