Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year guard
Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) converted a lay-up off a sideline out-of-bounds play with 0.6 seconds remaining, and the University of New England ran its winning streak to seven games with a thrilling 61-60 win over Regis College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at the Campus Center.
After Paradis' basket gave UNE a 61-59 lead, the Nor'easters received a bench technical as several of their players rushed the floor. Regis junior Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.) made the first of two free throws to draw the Pride within one point, but the second attempt was no good.
Still in possession of the basketball after the two free throw attempts, Regis was unable to get off a shot after a long inbounds pass was tipped away as time expired.
Just moments earlier, Page had tied the game (59-59) with 3.5 seconds remaining on a three-pointer from the top of the circle.
UNE needed to rally late just to get back into the game. Trailing 55-48 with 2:12 left, the Nor'easters scored nine straight points to grab a two-point lead (57-55) with 30 seconds remaining. Sophomore
April Mroz (Somersworth, N.H.) and senior
Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) canned back-to-back treys during the stretch to help UNE regain the lead.
The final minutes of the game reflected the entire second half, as the two teams battled back-and-forth the entire frame. The Nor'easters extended a two-point halftime advantage (27-25) to seven in the first 3:23. Regis then used runs of 13-3 and 9-2 in the middle of the period to take a 53-46 lead at the 3:35 mark.
Sophomore
Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the first half for UNE, which jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the opening 3:50 of the contest. The Nor'easters cooled off significantly after that, scoring just 14 in the rest of the half.
Both Regis and UNE finished the opening frame shooting 34.5 percent (10-for-29) as the Nor'easters held a slim edge on the scoreboard.
Paradis was the only other UNE player finding double figures in the scoring column, tallying 11 points and picking up eight rebounds. Senior
Sara Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) collected a team-high 10 boards before fouling out.
Page recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, with 16 of her points coming after intermission. Senior Laura Sears (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with 15 points for the Pride (13-5, 3-3 TCCC)
The Nor'easters (13-5, 6-0) will look to keep the streak going Saturday when Western New England College comes to Biddeford. Game time will be 1:00 p.m. The contest may be seen live on the Web at
