BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies placed nine runners in the Top 10 to cruise to the team title at the 2008 University of New England Invitational on Saturday at Rotary Park.
The Huskies took the first four spots and had a sixth-place finish to earn 16 points, missing a perfect team score by a single point. The University of Maine Farmington (78) was second, followed closely by the University of New England (83). Daniel Webster College (97), Maine Maritime Academy (121) and Endicott College (129) rounded out the field.
The individual champion was USM junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine), who posted a 8,000-meter time of 28:01. Teammates JJ Forcella (Falmouth, Maine), Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) earned the second, third and fourth spots, respectively.
UNE sophomore
Matt Veiga (Lynn, Mass.) broke up Southern Maine's bid for a perfect total, placing fifth with a time of 28:51.
First-year
Bosco Oringa (Portland, Maine) and sophomores
Josh Grenier (Otisfield, Maine),
Josh Havelin (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) and
Dan Kelleher (Norton, Mass.) each finished in the Top 30.
UNE returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Elms College Invitational.
