BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University forward Dan Gumb tipped in a missed shot with 1.9 seconds remaining to lift Roger Williams University to an 84-82 victory over the University of New England in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball game played Saturday afternoon.

After a jump shot by UNE's #Johnnie Jefferson# '09 (Dallas, Texas) had tied the game at 82-all with 24 seconds to play, Roger Williams called timeout to set up its final possession.  Corey Fava '11 (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) worked the clock down, then drove the lane and missed a lay-up.  Gumb collared the rebound and converted from the paint with 1.9 seconds on the clock.

Gumb's heroics erased an improbable second-half rally by the visiting Nor'easters.  Down 19 (49-30) with 19:00 to play, the Nor'easters came storming back over the ensuing four minutes, thanks to a 14-3 run.  Jefferson had five points, and #Chas Rentrope# '11 (Peoria, Ariz.) ended the spurt with a three-point play to make the score 52-44.

A 3-pointer by Roger Williams guard Michael Woolley '09 (Seattle, Wash.) broke UNE's momentum, and the Hawks seemed to have things under control from there, leading 69-59 with 6:23 on the clock.

UNE would not leave quietly, however, and rode the play of Jefferson and #Jaykyri Simpson# '09 (East Cleburne, Texas) the rest of the way.  The duo tallied eight points over the next few minutes, including a Simpson lay-up with 57 seconds left to get the Nor'easters within two at 76-74.

After a pair of free throws by Fava put RWU up by four (78-74), Simpson made three at the stripe on UNE's next two possessions to get the visitors within one (78-77).

Billy Barrett '09 (Fairfield, Conn.) pushed the Hawks' lead back to three (80-77) with two more freebies, but Jefferson would tie the game on a 3-ball with 43 ticks left.  The Hawks reclaimed the lead on their next possession when Geoff Baranger '08 (Fairfield, Conn.) was fouled and converted both free throw attempts.

Jefferson once again came up big for the Nor'easters, knocking down a jumper to tie the game at 82-all with 24 seconds remaining and setting the stage for the Hawks' pivotal final possession.

Baranger, the Hawks' 6'10" center, was tough to stop all afternoon.  He scored a game-high 26 points on 10-for-11 shooting, including the 1,000th point of his career.  Guard Ben Camobreco '08 (Duxbury, Mass.) made five 3-point field goals and finished with 21 points.

Jefferson drilled seven treys on his way to a career-best 33 points.  He grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and made three steals.  Simpson chipped in with 22 points and seven assists, while #Isaac Stickney# '08 (Rumford, Maine) and #Steve Belmonte# '09 (Levittown, N.Y.) scored 12 points apiece.

The Hawks (12-9, 8-1 TCCC) solidified their hold on first place in the conference standings by shooting a remarkable 60.5 percent (26 of 43) from the floor and making 8 of 8 free throw tries over the final 1:05.

UNE, which hosts Endicott College on Tuesday (Feb. 12), now stands at 12-9 overall and 6-3 in TCCC play.
