Gamache, Pelletier lead UNE to season-opening win

CASTINE, Maine -- Senior Alli Gamache and first-year Kari Pelletier combined to score 38 points as the University of New England Nor'easters opened their season with a 93-78 win over Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference women's basketball game played Sunday afternoon.

Gamache scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half.  Pelletier was 5-for-7 from the floor and 7-for-9 at the free throw line for the game en route to 17 points.

First-year forward Margo Russell recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while senior forward Sara Pelkey chipped in with 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and a 6-for7 performance from the free throw line. 

The Nor'easters shot 49.2 percent (30 of 61) from the field and turned the ball over just 12 times.

UNE returns to action Tuesday with a road game at national power University of Southern Maine.  Game time is 5:30 p.m.
