Men's ice hockey player Jared Melman has been named UNE Athlete of the Month for February 2014.

Melman tallied seven goals over five games during the period, which included a program single-game record four markers (and the game-winner) in a 5-4 overtime victory against Saint Anselm. Two days later, he received the ECAC Men's East League Player of the Week distinction.

The triumph over the Hawks in the regular-season finale bumped UNE up to its best-ever seed for the league postseason tournament.

The junior forward was named as an honorable mention pick to the all-ECAC East team -- the first Big Blue player to garner such an accolade. Melman was also announced as a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, which is presented annually to the top American-born collegiate hockey player in New England playing at the NCAA Division II or III level.

Melman finished 2013-14 with 16 goals, five more than anyone in the previous four seasons of the program.
