A veteran of the UNE coaching staff, Maldonado possesses a very impressive volleyball background as a player, coach, and official, picking up the sport at the age of 13. After high school and some time enlisted with the U.S. Coast Guard (that took him to the Arctic, Antarctica, and Vietnam, he returned to his native Puerto Rico and began playing volleyball for several regional teams.

Maldonado has overseen the volleyball program at the local YMCA, and has also managed to stay active as a player. He and his wife of 23 years, Lisa, reside in Old Orchard Beach.
