Holt has built the UNE men's ice hockey program from scratch over the past seven seasons, going through a two-year pre-varsity phase prior to having now completed five seasons in the highly-competitive ECAC Men's East League.
In 2013-14, the Nor'easters registered a program-record 10 victories -- four higher than any season before. For the second time in as many years, Holt's squad defeated a nationally-ranked foe, posting a 3-1 home win over then-No. 6 Babson. Big Blue went 7-11-0 in league play to earn its best-ever seed (6) for the postseason tournament.
UNE topped a Castleton State program -- ranked No. 11 at the time -- during the 2012-13 season in overtime, 3-2.
Big Blue captured the mid-season PAL Cup at Southern New Hampshire during 2011-12, turning back the hosts before edging UMass Boston in penalty shots (2-0) to claim the title.
After three wins in their first full varsity season, Holt and the Nor'easters notched double the number of victories during the 2010-11 campaign (6), which included three triumphs over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents. The season also featured the program's premiere win -- a 5-2 defeat of regional-power Amherst College.
Over the years, Holt has had experience as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Colby College (1980), as a player and coach for the Ishockey Klub of Aalborg, Denmark (1980-1982), and as a coach and arena manager for the Oyster River Youth Hockey Association (1985-1995) in New Hampshire. He then stayed locally to serve as head coach at New Hampton Prep School (1996-2001), before a move to Vermont to lead the Green Mountain Glades of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (2001-2006). More recently, Holt spent a couple years as a game official and referee evaluator for Hockey East, in addition to his continued work with The Clinic hosted by Bowdoin College (30 years).
The Durham, N.H. native resides in Dover, N.H. and has two grown sons. A 1979 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Holt was a three-year letter winner for the NCAA Division I Wildcats and played on two NCAA Final Four squads. After graduation, he played for the Dayton Gems in the Washington Capitals organization.
Holt has helped UNE bring back an ice hockey program that enjoyed a great deal of success in the late 1970's, winning three consecutive NAIA District 5 championships when the University was known as St. Francis College.
